Apparently after 9 hours of sleep, my body doesn't know how to rest anymore so I'm up again at 6:30. The hotel stay last night was much less stressful than the night before. Addison wasn't exhausted enough not to be bouncing off the walls and she was still the last one asleep I think, but at least she was just bouncing around in her bed and not all over the room...as she was at our last hotel. That little girl (and all of her energy) will do amazing things in life, if simply pointed in the right direction. She is a child of extremes and very dramatic, which can be bad on one end, but so rewarding and hilarious on the other. Last night at Chick-fil-a she was SO excited when we said she could get ice cream and even though she had been looking forward to going to Nana's, her little eyes lit up when we said we were going to another hotel and she could go...swimming! What is it with kids and swimming? I know I was the same way as a kid. Why spend money on a big vacation, just go to the local hotel and let your kids swim! :)
On another note, when I woke up this morning I was thinking about the significance of today. Maybe Good Friday to you is kind of like Boxing Day in Canada (Dec. 26)...just some words on a calendar. Your life is completely unaffected by the significance of today. Maybe for you it is a Holy Day. Maybe your like me and you are sobered and humbled at the thought of today. Good Friday. The day we remember the cross.
I normally listen to podcasts while my girls are napping and I am getting things done around the house. Some of my favorite podcasts include: Passion, North Point, Gallery Church, Focus on the Family, and my latest addition - Dave Ramsey. Lately I have been listening to a series by Andy Stanley called "Its Personal." In the series he is talking to adults centered around one basic idea - who do you believe Jesus is? He says that most adults who believe in Christ don't do so b/c someone answered all of their questions and all of their objections go away, but b/c something happens that makes the objections and questions smaller - it becomes personal. For example, a lot of single guys give lots of reasons for not getting married - freedom, career, money, etc.. until they meet "the one." Then marriage is not an idea...its a person and all the objections get a lot smaller.
Another example he gave was about a study done on hitting a major league fast ball. The study concluded that it is scientifically impossible to hit a baseball going 90mph. There is simply not enough time for the batter to process what is happening and react in time to hit the ball. However, even a casual observer of baseball can throw that scientific evidence out the window...because they've seen it happen. In life we most often choose to go with the undeniable - seeing someone hit a fastball - rather than the unexplainable - the scientific study that says its impossible.
So for me the significance of today is deeper than a historical event that happened almost 2000 years ago. A lot of people would agree with the historical account that a man named Jesus was crucified by Roman soldiers. You can explain the nature of his horrific death because it followed a patterned of Roman executions of the day. A lot things about the day can be explained in an historical way. However, what might be unexplainable for some, yet is undenable, is the change the cross has made in my life. You see, to me Jesus is more than a man that was wrongly executed - He is my Savior who died on a cross for my sins. He took the penalty that I deserved and laid down His life for me. You might disagree because that is something that cannot be explained, but one thing you cannot disagree with what has happened to me... "you ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart."
