a New York Resident

We are officially New York residents! The past week has been CRAZY! Between an unexpected hospital stay, a 3 day journey to New York, move in day, unpacking and learning our way around a new place...we have been busy! I don't have a lot of pictures from the past week, but a lot of good stories!
The girls did a fantastic job on the journey here. We left Tuesday afternoon, after a farewell lunch at Chick-fil-a with my parents. I still haven't told Addison that there are no Chick-fil-a's here. Then we picked up Chad's mom and started out north. Since Mya wasn't discharged from the hospital until 5:30 Monday night and I was up late packing, I knew we wouldn't make it far in our journey the first day. We stopped in Sevierville, TN, which is close to Gatlinburg. Addison LOVES to stay in hotels...unfortunately its not as much fun for me. It is so hard to get her to go to sleep in a hotel room. Pretty much everyone in the room has to go to bed the same time as she does and she is not a lot of fun to sleep with. She loves unpacking the car, taking the stairs, seeing what's for breakfast each morning and checking out the pool. Little Mya doesn't care where she sleeps. She was a DREAM during the whole trip! I think the hospital stay wore her out too, which helped her rest most of the trip.
The next morning we headed out on our second day hoping to make it to Carlisle, PA. Addison was so excited that we found a Chick-fil-a in Maryland for dinner... probably one of the most northern Chick-fil-a on the East Coast! A crazy active 3 year old and a nursing baby make for a slow trip and lots of stops, but thankfully with Chad's mom there to help, we could divide and conquer with the kids!
Thursday we only had about 350 miles left to go to Watertown. The drive was beautiful and thankfully uneventful! Addison was SO excited to see her Daddy! While of course I was happy to see Chad, I was anxious to see the house. This is the 2nd time that Chad has signed for a house before I've seen it! He does a great job though! Ft. Drum is unusual in the fact that SOO many things are brand new! I guess the post has exploded with growth in the past year. There is a whole complex off post of new stores and restaurants as well as a new PX and Commissary on post, right down the street from our house.
Move in day went pretty smoothly, with just a few incidents. We quickly learned that the people who packed our stuff did not do the best job. Our kitchen table had several tiles smashed and Addison accidently shattered one of the glass doors on our tv stand. Right before we moved, we bought new bedroom furniture. We were so worried that the new room wouldn't hold all the new pieces! The movers cracked me up carrying it up our 3 level stairs. The dresser is huge and apparently very heavy. When they brought it in the guys asked where it was going, when I said upstairs, the young guy just laughed. Half-way up he said, "Where did you get this furniture??" I said, "Ashley Furniture." He laughed and said, "I need to write them a letter!" HA! They did bang the walls up a little, but a least they got all the furniture upstairs in one piece!

Over the past several days, we have gradually been unpacking and getting settled. Normally we can unpack all of our boxes and have stuff on the walls in 3-4 days. This time is a little different. With Addison running around, a nursing baby and Chad's injured elbow, things are a lot slower. Hopefully we'll be done by the end of this week.

I will try to get pictures up soon!

Strength

Blogs are interesting.  Some share decorating ideas, some political philosophy, some day to day happenings and many more pictures of family and friends.  We keep everyone updated on the fun events and happy occasions of our everyday lives.  While some people take it a bit to far, I think most of us are not always so quick to share those not so happy moments though...  The moments that we fail completely as a parent.  The moments that we are to busy to stop and help.  The moments we sit in silence and wonder why.  The moments when life is just flat out hard.  In a few weeks I will watch my husband go off to war.   In a few weeks I will have to help a little 3 year old mind grasp how long a year is and how far away daddy will be.   I just found out this morning that my aunt passed away.   Next week the list of names I know on headstones at Arlington will get a little bit longer.  I ache for my friends whose husbands won'...

Change of Command

Here are a few pictures from Chad's Change of Command Ceremony. I hope to get more pictures from the official photographer that day. I didn't get any pictures of myself and my White House Black Market dress! :) The Food... Chad and I aren't huge fans of cake, so we got a cookie cake instead from a local bakery. I wish I had taken a picture of the entire table, but I only at time for a few pictures. Everyone was pretty impressed with the spread. My mom taught me how to prepare lots and lots of food and how to make it tasty! Addison kept snagging food before the ceremony started! C-Troop Taking Command! So proud of Chad! We look forward to serving with the Outcast family!

Lake Placid

Over Columbus Day, we decided to take advantage of the time for one more family trip before the deployment. Lake Placid has been on our list of places we wanted to go and we chose to wait until the fall to enjoy seeing all the leaves changing in the Adirondacks. The leaves were a little past peak, but it was still beautiful.  To understand how much we enjoyed this trip, you have to understand how much we enjoy the Olympics.  Let's just say we are Olympic fanatics...the Atwells would understand. :)  On our way in to town, we stopped had lunch at a recommended BBQ place. That afternoon, we only had time to go to one venue before they closed for the day.  If you don't know the history, Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980 and is still a site for Olympic training.  First stop - Bobsled, Combination Track   You can pay to ride down the 1932 bobsled course.  It looked fun! After the Bobsled track, we headed back to the hotel and ...
