West Point - Day 1

West Point is one of our favorite places in the world!  Not only is it a beautiful place, we share so many memories there, including our engagement and Chad's graduation/commissioning.  It is also so rich in history that you can't help but be in awe when you think about all the people who have walked the same hallways in the past!  We were able to go down for Chad's five year reunion since we live so close.  It was definitely a different experience, especially for Chad, having to drive around, look for parking, being forced to park very far away at times, and trying to maneuver a stroller around a non-stroller friendly place.

We arrived on Thursday night and took a drive around post.  In a way, it was like seeing it for the first time!  Before, we looked at it as a school, now we look at it as a post where we hope to live.  Things like CYS, ACS, and housing are important to us now, where as before, we didn't even know those offices existed!  We stayed right outside post at the Five Star, which again, brought back a lot of memories because that is where I would always stay with Chad's parents when we visited.  Unfortunately there was a storm Thursday night that knocked out the power.  No  power = no fan = little sleep

If you have been to West Point more than once, you have experienced a day like we had Friday - drizzling rain, windy and cool.  Thankfully it wasn't pouring, so we could still walk around some, but it definitely was not comfortable.  Our first stop was Arvin Gym.  It was under construction all the times I visited before.  Chad's friend is the assistant coach of the wrestling team, so we stopped in to see him first.  (Chad wrestled at West Point his first 2 years.)

The new wrestling room
While Chad talked with Ryan, Addison explored Arvin. She had me take her picture on every step!

After our lunch at the Firstie Club.  Lunch at the Firstie Club was the only part of the reunion we participated in - there were only about 15 of Chad's classmates there.  Chad just looks like a grad, doesn't he??
Go Army/Beat Navy tunnel
Walking across the Plain (in the rain) to the new library - Jefferson Hall
Addison LOVED taking pictures with the statues...which can be time consuming at West Point!
View from the top floor of the Library.
West Point is the only place where walking into the dining hall can make you feel like such a rebel!
Central Area - again, feeling like a rebel for being back there!
West Point has EVERY sports team imaginable!  Since Addison takes gymnastics, we thought she would enjoy seeing the gymnastics center....that is until we walked in and realized West Point doesn't have a women's gymnastics team!  The team was in the middle of practice and we felt a little awkward bringing our 3 year old daughter in to watch a bunch of shirtless guys practice!

Strength

Blogs are interesting.  Some share decorating ideas, some political philosophy, some day to day happenings and many more pictures of family and friends.  We keep everyone updated on the fun events and happy occasions of our everyday lives.  While some people take it a bit to far, I think most of us are not always so quick to share those not so happy moments though...  The moments that we fail completely as a parent.  The moments that we are to busy to stop and help.  The moments we sit in silence and wonder why.  The moments when life is just flat out hard.  In a few weeks I will watch my husband go off to war.   In a few weeks I will have to help a little 3 year old mind grasp how long a year is and how far away daddy will be.   I just found out this morning that my aunt passed away.   Next week the list of names I know on headstones at Arlington will get a little bit longer.  I ache for my friends whose husbands won'...

Change of Command

Here are a few pictures from Chad's Change of Command Ceremony. I hope to get more pictures from the official photographer that day. I didn't get any pictures of myself and my White House Black Market dress! :) The Food... Chad and I aren't huge fans of cake, so we got a cookie cake instead from a local bakery. I wish I had taken a picture of the entire table, but I only at time for a few pictures. Everyone was pretty impressed with the spread. My mom taught me how to prepare lots and lots of food and how to make it tasty! Addison kept snagging food before the ceremony started! C-Troop Taking Command! So proud of Chad! We look forward to serving with the Outcast family!

Lake Placid

Over Columbus Day, we decided to take advantage of the time for one more family trip before the deployment. Lake Placid has been on our list of places we wanted to go and we chose to wait until the fall to enjoy seeing all the leaves changing in the Adirondacks. The leaves were a little past peak, but it was still beautiful.  To understand how much we enjoyed this trip, you have to understand how much we enjoy the Olympics.  Let's just say we are Olympic fanatics...the Atwells would understand. :)  On our way in to town, we stopped had lunch at a recommended BBQ place. That afternoon, we only had time to go to one venue before they closed for the day.  If you don't know the history, Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980 and is still a site for Olympic training.  First stop - Bobsled, Combination Track   You can pay to ride down the 1932 bobsled course.  It looked fun! After the Bobsled track, we headed back to the hotel and ...
