new routines and mini family getaway

A few weeks ago we decided to take a quick family vacation.  It was a nice change of pace after 3 weeks of staring at the inside of my kitchen!

Our first stop, the American Museum of Natural History in NYC...aka The Night at the Museum.  We thought it would be a cool thing to do and it is free for military families...unless you want to go to the Imax or similar "extra" shows.  Advice - if you're military, DON'T pay extra!  A free outing quickly turned expensive.
Hopefully this won't offend any of you out there, but we were just not big fans.  It took us about 2 seconds to realize we were basically in an evolution museum.  Don't get me wrong, it has some neat stuff...we would just rather go see live animals.  Maybe that's harsh.  Moving on...

Dumb Dumb!

After NYC we headed to Shelton, CT.  We had been told there was a Hampton Inn with a great water slide.  To our girls it might as well have been their own private White Water.  They had no competition for the slide and had hours of fun!

Unfortunately I fell ill the first night of our two night vacation!  I thought I had a kidney stone.  We still aren't sure if it was, but needless to say, it hurt.  So, instead of pressing on with our plans to go to Mystic, CT, we chose to stay at the "water slide" hotel.  Our girls couldn't have been happier.  So our grand plans turned into a vacation in Shelton.  It was quiet and the girls had fun, so I guess it works!

Game time at the local arcade

On the way home we decided to go back through NYC and have lunch in Central Park.

Silly girls!

Addison has been waiting since the end of March for it to be time to go to gymnastics again.  The child counts down the days for gymnastics each week.  She LOVES it.

Miss Mya has grown up over night!  Before vacation, she woke up one morning and decided that she was going to be potty trained.  She has never looked back!

If you are a first time parent, listen to my words.  I am no expert and I only have two kids, but listen to me - DO NOT rush or push your child to potty train!  Addison and I battled for almost a year before it finally clicked!  I thought she was ready and I pushed too soon.  With Mya I purposely held back and was reluctant to start.  It is night and day when you let the child lead.  Goodness.  Enough said.

We (by that I totally mean Chad) told Mya that when she started wearing panties, we would change her bed so that she could get in and out on her own.  I totally didn't see the need for this! :) She loves her bed and never once tried to climb out.  Again, with our dear first child, changing the bed wreaked havoc in our house at nap time, bed time and mornings for several weeks.
Well, apparently it was time, because I came home the other day and Chad had decided to change her bed!  Well, in true Mya fashion, this change is no big deal.  We practiced calling for Mommy when she was ready to get up and so far it has worked!  This morning and after nap time today, she sat in her bed until I came and told her she could get out.  One thing is for sure, with a trailblazer like Addison, most situations after are easy.   Don't get me wrong, Addison is an awesome, sharp and talented kid...but trailblazer for sure. :)

Strength

Blogs are interesting.  Some share decorating ideas, some political philosophy, some day to day happenings and many more pictures of family and friends.  We keep everyone updated on the fun events and happy occasions of our everyday lives.  While some people take it a bit to far, I think most of us are not always so quick to share those not so happy moments though...  The moments that we fail completely as a parent.  The moments that we are to busy to stop and help.  The moments we sit in silence and wonder why.  The moments when life is just flat out hard.  In a few weeks I will watch my husband go off to war.   In a few weeks I will have to help a little 3 year old mind grasp how long a year is and how far away daddy will be.   I just found out this morning that my aunt passed away.   Next week the list of names I know on headstones at Arlington will get a little bit longer.  I ache for my friends whose husbands won'...

Change of Command

Here are a few pictures from Chad's Change of Command Ceremony. I hope to get more pictures from the official photographer that day. I didn't get any pictures of myself and my White House Black Market dress! :) The Food... Chad and I aren't huge fans of cake, so we got a cookie cake instead from a local bakery. I wish I had taken a picture of the entire table, but I only at time for a few pictures. Everyone was pretty impressed with the spread. My mom taught me how to prepare lots and lots of food and how to make it tasty! Addison kept snagging food before the ceremony started! C-Troop Taking Command! So proud of Chad! We look forward to serving with the Outcast family!

Lake Placid

Over Columbus Day, we decided to take advantage of the time for one more family trip before the deployment. Lake Placid has been on our list of places we wanted to go and we chose to wait until the fall to enjoy seeing all the leaves changing in the Adirondacks. The leaves were a little past peak, but it was still beautiful.  To understand how much we enjoyed this trip, you have to understand how much we enjoy the Olympics.  Let's just say we are Olympic fanatics...the Atwells would understand. :)  On our way in to town, we stopped had lunch at a recommended BBQ place. That afternoon, we only had time to go to one venue before they closed for the day.  If you don't know the history, Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980 and is still a site for Olympic training.  First stop - Bobsled, Combination Track   You can pay to ride down the 1932 bobsled course.  It looked fun! After the Bobsled track, we headed back to the hotel and ...
