First Trip to the Zoo

While we were in Birmingham, we braved the hottest day of the year and massive amounts of field trips to take Addison on her first trip to the Zoo! My friends were surprised that I had never taken Addison to the zoo...I guess that has never been on the agenda! Addison really enjoyed the animals, but similar to the aquarium trip, after about 2 hours, she was ready to move on to something else!

Taking a look at the flamingos.
Krista took Addison inside the Aviary. Addison got a kick out of the birds landing on her arm. I was glad Krista went on this one...a room full of birds and little kids = not my cup of tea. :)

Mya and I waiting patiently for Addison and Krista to come back from the Aviary.

"mining" in Australian habitat
The Zoo is a little bit like a day of "Where's Waldo?" ...so many of the animals were hard to see, not in their cage (or habitats...) and most of them were asleep. By the end of the day, Addison learned it was naptime at the zoo!
Creepy Alligator

Looking for something exciting...

I love this picture! At this angle, Addison and the Rhinos look about the same size! It did make me a little nervous, because those 2 little fences did not seem like enough to keep those Rhinos in if they wanted out!
Our favorite part of the day - a camel ride for Addison!

Observing the tiger's nap time
Exploring the butterfly house

After the zoo, we went across the street to the Botanical Gardens for a picnic lunch. Thankfully we found a nice big shade tree to get some relief from the heat!

After lunch Addison and Krista explored the gardens a little while Mya and I relaxed under the tree. Addison here is playing "hockey" with a piece of ice.

A short, but very fun visit with my dear friend Krista!

Strength

Blogs are interesting.  Some share decorating ideas, some political philosophy, some day to day happenings and many more pictures of family and friends.  We keep everyone updated on the fun events and happy occasions of our everyday lives.  While some people take it a bit to far, I think most of us are not always so quick to share those not so happy moments though...  The moments that we fail completely as a parent.  The moments that we are to busy to stop and help.  The moments we sit in silence and wonder why.  The moments when life is just flat out hard.  In a few weeks I will watch my husband go off to war.   In a few weeks I will have to help a little 3 year old mind grasp how long a year is and how far away daddy will be.   I just found out this morning that my aunt passed away.   Next week the list of names I know on headstones at Arlington will get a little bit longer.  I ache for my friends whose husbands won'...

Change of Command

Here are a few pictures from Chad's Change of Command Ceremony. I hope to get more pictures from the official photographer that day. I didn't get any pictures of myself and my White House Black Market dress! :) The Food... Chad and I aren't huge fans of cake, so we got a cookie cake instead from a local bakery. I wish I had taken a picture of the entire table, but I only at time for a few pictures. Everyone was pretty impressed with the spread. My mom taught me how to prepare lots and lots of food and how to make it tasty! Addison kept snagging food before the ceremony started! C-Troop Taking Command! So proud of Chad! We look forward to serving with the Outcast family!

Lake Placid

Over Columbus Day, we decided to take advantage of the time for one more family trip before the deployment. Lake Placid has been on our list of places we wanted to go and we chose to wait until the fall to enjoy seeing all the leaves changing in the Adirondacks. The leaves were a little past peak, but it was still beautiful.  To understand how much we enjoyed this trip, you have to understand how much we enjoy the Olympics.  Let's just say we are Olympic fanatics...the Atwells would understand. :)  On our way in to town, we stopped had lunch at a recommended BBQ place. That afternoon, we only had time to go to one venue before they closed for the day.  If you don't know the history, Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980 and is still a site for Olympic training.  First stop - Bobsled, Combination Track   You can pay to ride down the 1932 bobsled course.  It looked fun! After the Bobsled track, we headed back to the hotel and ...
