Just to be clear...I'm not an Oprah fan. She has done great things and is certainly successful, but I rarely ever watched her show and differ with her significantly on issues and philosophy. That being said, I recorded her last show this week. I recorded and watched the royal wedding and President Reagan's funeral, presidential addresses and inaugurations for the same reason - its a part of history. Granted, a television show finale is not a significant part of history, but still a part of history.
At the beginning of her show she talked about feeling called to do what you do in life. She said her calling happened to line up with her line of work, but that doesn't always happen. She talked about how important it is to have a light in your life that pushes you and drives and inspires you in everything you do. She also talked about God's influence in her life. I can't know her heart or what she believes, but she spoke about God in a more direct way than many people in her position would.
Her words struck a chord with me. I pray each day that my motivation and the spark that drives everything I do is ultimately to bring honor and glory to the Lord. Within that I pray that my motivation for all I do is to serve others. My husband, my kids, my family, my church, my army family and beyond. I pray that I don't wander through life checking things off a to do list. I want to spend my life pouring into the lives of others. That will probably look different every day. One day it may be teaching my kids to share or write their name, another day it will be listening to a discouraged Army wife who is feeling overwhelmed.
My life is not my own - it has been bought with a price. I often wonder how much easier life would be to be an underachiever! :) I am far from perfect and fail miserably many days, but I pray that the legacy I leave with my daughters is to never settle for doing less than your best - not for your own sake, but for the sake of others and to the glory of God.
Thanks Oprah for the reminder.
