Update on our girls

This summer has been pretty busy for the Monroe family!  More updates coming soon.
For now, an update on two of my favorite people...

Addison is 5 1/2 and growing up fast!  She is really enjoying having her sister old enough to really play with her now.

She weighs 37lbs and is about 47 inches tall.

Very excited to start Kindergarten on August 16th!  We are homeschooling this year and we are using Abeka curriculum.  Along with phonics, reading, writing, Bible and math daily, we will be doing science and art once a week and Social Studies twice a week.  For Social Studies we are using Road Trip USA curriculum from Confessions of a Homeschooler Blog.  I LOVE this packet and can't wait to use it!  It was only $18 and we can use it through 4th grade!!!

Addison will also be starting piano lessons in September!  We are going to encourage all our kids to take piano at least for a little while, since it is a great skill to have later in life.  While I could teach her the basics for the first few years, we have opted to have someone else teach her piano.  With me teaching everything else, it will be a nice change of pace for both of us!  A lady here at West Point will actually come to our house for lessons and does part piano lesson, part fun music lesson.  She said it keeps the interest of little ones much more effectively than sitting at the piano for 30 minutes.

Gymnastics will also be returning to our schedule in September as well.  We are very fortunate to live on a college campus that has amazing sports facilities!  I would have driven the extra miles to save some money and send Addison to a "regular" gymnastics class, but Chad insisted on her taking gymnastics here...so the West Point Gymnastics Club it is!  Even though it is more money, it is around the corner and hopefully it will be a great quality program.  Seriously folks, she's only 5.  Someone just needs to remind her dad that Olympic trials aren't next year...

During our travels, Addison's favorite thing to to is swim!  She is doing so great swimming without her swimmies! The kid would rather go to a pool than just about anything else.

She loves going to the library and has been a part of the Summer Reading Program.  We read 3 books a week and she gets to track her progress and pick out prizes each week at the library.

One of the biggest change in Addison over the past year or so is her eating.  She is MUCH more open to trying new foods.  Gone are the battles of eating.  She is probably the healthiest eater in the house.  She eats vegetables no problem...as long as they are raw!  She will now finally eat chicken, steak (as long as you call it alligator steak...thanks to Kris Perrin!), but her most favorite is FISH!  Still won't  eat ground meat, but I'll take the progress we've made!

She is still as spunky and lively as ever! Love her!

If you know me, you know its a stretch for me to let my child eat this, much less post it on the blog.  As I told my Chad's mom the other day...my kids ate super healthy before the days of birthday parties!  This is from my niece, Lilly's, birthday party in Georgia.   Moving on...

Mya is such a little girl!  She loves to dress up and calls a dress a "princess."

She still wants to sing "Jesus" (Jesus Love Me) before nap and bedtime, but she loves to lay on her rocking chair and sing to herself.

Common questions: "Whatcha doin?"  "Where we goin?" "Can I go wif you?"

Kid will eat pretty much anything depending on her mood.

Has an adorable squeaky voice.

LOVES to read books.  She will pick a book and want to read it over and over and over.

Very attached to her yellow blanket from Mrs. Darlene.

Loves to carry a baby doll and a purse anywhere we go.

Totally copies anything and everything Addison does.   This is a huge reason Addison and I will still be doing school during Mya's naptime!

Has NO fear, which gets her into trouble sometimes.

Does not enjoy when Chad or I leaves without her.

Plays really well by herself if Addison is gone somewhere, but really wants to know when Addison will be home.

Tough as nails with her sister.  Holding her ground often gets both of them in trouble.

Still sleeping a crib - if it ain't broke...

No, we haven't started potty training.  Neither one of us are ready.  Traveling is just not the time to attempt it.  I started WAY too soon with Addison and know how hard that made it for both of us. Maybe before she is three we'll get it.

Stubborn and definitely moves through life at her own pace.

Love our sweet girls!!  So precious to see them growing up together!!

Curriculum Review 2017-18

Curriculum Review 2017-18 I believe I started last year's post by saying "This was the most difficult school year to date." While overall it was a good year, it was different kind of difficult.  A deployment and chronic mastitis were replaced with starting a new Co-Op and writing a book.   While I don't know that I would recommend writing a book in 10 months while homeschooling, during one of the busiest seasons of your husband's job, I am thankful for the year we had.  The past year brought more personal growth for me than any other year.  Homeschooling truly is a refining fire and I am thankful for the lessons we all learn in the process.   Here’s a roundup of what we used this year and how it worked for us: Addison – 5 th  Grade Bible, History, Literature, Geography & Writing – Tapestry of Grace, Year 2, Dialectic...

Strength

Blogs are interesting.  Some share decorating ideas, some political philosophy, some day to day happenings and many more pictures of family and friends.  We keep everyone updated on the fun events and happy occasions of our everyday lives.  While some people take it a bit to far, I think most of us are not always so quick to share those not so happy moments though...  The moments that we fail completely as a parent.  The moments that we are to busy to stop and help.  The moments we sit in silence and wonder why.  The moments when life is just flat out hard.  In a few weeks I will watch my husband go off to war.   In a few weeks I will have to help a little 3 year old mind grasp how long a year is and how far away daddy will be.   I just found out this morning that my aunt passed away.   Next week the list of names I know on headstones at Arlington will get a little bit longer.  I ache for my friends whose husbands won'...
