Curriculum Review 2019-20

I am in disbelief that I have been homeschooling for nine years. I still feel like the new kid on the block, but I guess that isn't necessarily true anymore.  However, like parenting, homeschooling is a plate of shifting sands - once you think you figure things out, things change! Kids change, life circumstances change, and curriculums that worked for one, don't work for another.    Also, as the years pass, I let go a little more of "what school  should  look like" in exchange for "what school  can  look like." This was the first year of homeschooling that we did not move and/or I did not have a baby.  Throw in two months of quarantine thanks to COVID 19 and we have had a pretty calm year!  Here’s a roundup of what we used this past year and how it worked for us: Morning Time              We start our morning together with a few group activities, wrangling people to ...

Curriculum Review 2018-19 We moved to another country in the middle of our school year and we all survived.  Our school books tagged along in six countries over nine months, which felt frazzled at times, but I was so thankful for the opportunity to say yes to trips knowing that school could come with us!  Here’s a roundup of what we used this past year and how it worked for us: Addison – 6 th  Grade Bible - Apologia What We Believe Series - Who Is God  History, Literature, Geography and Writing – Tapestry of Grace, Year 3, Dialectic         Our 2nd year of Co-op was much smoother than our first!  Addison adjusted more to the longer reading assignments and I relaxed my expectations about reading assignments and learned to let some things go.  Year 3 covers the 1800's, which includes favorites like the Civil War and the Gilded Age.   Language Arts  - Abeka      ...

Curriculum Review 2017-18

Curriculum Review 2017-18 I believe I started last year's post by saying "This was the most difficult school year to date." While overall it was a good year, it was different kind of difficult.  A deployment and chronic mastitis were replaced with starting a new Co-Op and writing a book.   While I don't know that I would recommend writing a book in 10 months while homeschooling, during one of the busiest seasons of your husband's job, I am thankful for the year we had.  The past year brought more personal growth for me than any other year.  Homeschooling truly is a refining fire and I am thankful for the lessons we all learn in the process.   Here’s a roundup of what we used this year and how it worked for us: Addison – 5 th  Grade Bible, History, Literature, Geography & Writing – Tapestry of Grace, Year 2, Dialectic...

Summer Video Scrapbook

(It's October 18th...the fact that I just finished our Summer Video is a pretty accurate snapshot into my life these days.) My children have come to expect these digital scrapbooks at the end of every big trip or summer vacation! They get longer each year as I'm not a great editor of my own experiences! Enjoy!!

Curriculum Review 2016-17

Curriculum Review 2016-17             This was our most challenging homeschool year thus far.   In the span of 4 months, we had a baby, moved, traveled to Georgia twice and started a deployment.   On top of all of that, I was plagued with chronic mastitis for 11 months.   Throw in a round of the flu, a stomach bug, a baby that didn’t want to sleep through the night, a computer that died during the middle of the year and single parenting in a place where I knew virtually no one…that is a recipe for a long school year.   Despite all of that, we still had a great year.   Yes, it was challenging, but we made the best of it, grew together and even had a little fun in the process!               If you have read any of my previous curriculum posts, you know that I don’t often try new things and strive for “less is more.”   I do not want to over...
