heading out

The only thing to say about the beginning of a deployment if you've never been through one is that it flat out stinks.  The anticipation leading up to it wasn't as bad for us this time because we were so busy and traveled a lot.  The first few weeks into it though are tough because a year seems so daunting, you have yet to reach any milestones and for me, my kids are completely unsettled.  Anytime there are changes in our schedule or people come to visit, Addison gets on the wild and crazier side of life.  I am praying that things settled down in her world this week!

It is amazing how little he takes to be gone a year!

We (ok ME) wanted to get a couple pictures the day Chad left.  It was a BEAUTIFUL day!

Since Chad had to be at the hanger in the middle of the night, I took him by myself.  We put the girls to bed like normal and Chad's mom stayed with them while I took Chad.  We have found things to be much easier if we stay in a routine, so that's what we did that night too.  For Chad, making things emotional or more dramatic just makes it harder.  As my friend Lorie said about her picture with her husband....I'm not sure why we look so happy!!

Walking away from my husband knowing I won't see him for months is the most painful, unnatural feeling I've ever felt.  It doesn't get easier the more I do it.   Don't take for granted the freedoms you have, they come at such a high price.  One thing I hate is when people, good intentioned I'm sure, compare Chad's deployments to business trips or ask me if he has ever seen any "action."  They are not business trips - it is war.  He doesn't sit around wasting tax dollars and time.  He faces real danger every single day.  He carries real guns with real bullets and fights along side the bravest men and women in the world.  He will miss his daughter's first steps, her first words and her first birthday. I don't say that in an angry way, just in a realistic way.  If you live in America and enjoy its freedoms, you should understand what goes into keeping you free.
I am proud to be an Army wife and stand with so many other strong spouses.  We aren't stronger than anyone else by nature, we are strong because it is what our country, our husbands and our children need us to be.
So, as an American, just remember when you lay your head on your pillow each night that your freedom isn't free and pray for the soldiers around the world who willingly and proudly fight for you.

Change of Command

Here are a few pictures from Chad's Change of Command Ceremony. I hope to get more pictures from the official photographer that day. I didn't get any pictures of myself and my White House Black Market dress! :) The Food... Chad and I aren't huge fans of cake, so we got a cookie cake instead from a local bakery. I wish I had taken a picture of the entire table, but I only at time for a few pictures. Everyone was pretty impressed with the spread. My mom taught me how to prepare lots and lots of food and how to make it tasty! Addison kept snagging food before the ceremony started! C-Troop Taking Command! So proud of Chad! We look forward to serving with the Outcast family!

Lake Placid

Over Columbus Day, we decided to take advantage of the time for one more family trip before the deployment. Lake Placid has been on our list of places we wanted to go and we chose to wait until the fall to enjoy seeing all the leaves changing in the Adirondacks. The leaves were a little past peak, but it was still beautiful.  To understand how much we enjoyed this trip, you have to understand how much we enjoy the Olympics.  Let's just say we are Olympic fanatics...the Atwells would understand. :)  On our way in to town, we stopped had lunch at a recommended BBQ place. That afternoon, we only had time to go to one venue before they closed for the day.  If you don't know the history, Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980 and is still a site for Olympic training.  First stop - Bobsled, Combination Track   You can pay to ride down the 1932 bobsled course.  It looked fun! After the Bobsled track, we headed back to the hotel and ...

Strength

Blogs are interesting.  Some share decorating ideas, some political philosophy, some day to day happenings and many more pictures of family and friends.  We keep everyone updated on the fun events and happy occasions of our everyday lives.  While some people take it a bit to far, I think most of us are not always so quick to share those not so happy moments though...  The moments that we fail completely as a parent.  The moments that we are to busy to stop and help.  The moments we sit in silence and wonder why.  The moments when life is just flat out hard.  In a few weeks I will watch my husband go off to war.   In a few weeks I will have to help a little 3 year old mind grasp how long a year is and how far away daddy will be.   I just found out this morning that my aunt passed away.   Next week the list of names I know on headstones at Arlington will get a little bit longer.  I ache for my friends whose husbands won'...
